Artworks Community Theatre is not simply a performing arts theatre; it is a community-owned, volunteer-run, multi-purpose venue which is able to be claimed as "home" for a variety of Waiheke groups. The Snug is a relaxed and intimate venue with couches and comfortable seating for up to 20 people, and is ideal for poetry recitals, book clubs, study groups, club meetings, etc. The Auditorium (includes the stage) may be hired separately for larger group activities and performing arts, or may be hired along with the Snug for exclusive use.
The Theatre has a licensed café and EFTPOS facilities available for special events.
We have brought new energy and enthusiasm to the Theatre with an incorporated society as the administrative structure so that many hands can make light work. This ensures the brightest of futures for our wonderful community asset. The Society has been operating the Theatre since 2008 and always welcomes new members. If you're into performing, children's theatre, lighting, direction/production, set design or construction, sound, front of house, administration, makeup and wardrobe, backstage, special effects, or providing that essential component of performing arts — the audience! — get in touch with your name, edress and phone number, and we'll add you as a Friend of Artworks Theatre. There is no subscription to join the Society, so feel free!

Upcoming Special Events:
May 2012
- Sa05May 2-6pm: Theatres of Resistance: After the exciting, dramatic, participatory time we had last year celebrating May Day, TOR is aiming at creating an annual community event. This year, to the line-up of poets, musicians and performance artists, a locally written play and skits will be added. The images and video and doco component of the show, which lifts it out of the ordinary, will be stronger. Playback Theatre will again be dramatizing the stories the audience have to tell. And, in the interest of keeping participation alive and well, the staged spoken word will happen in public/private conversations that address issues in the local, national and international arena. People attending will be invited to enter into the dialogue to widen and deepen all our understanding. Expect a lively, thought-provoking time, and prepare to take what is learnt out of the theatre and into the world. Admission by koha.
- Fr18/Sa19 May 7:30pm: Circus Royale World Premiere: Circus Royale is a new New Zealand comedy written by (former Theatre Chairman) Colin Beardon and directed by the Theatre’s Artist-in-Residence Liam Burke. He had a privileged upbringing and a social conscience. She grew up in New Zealand and took off on her OE. They met and fell in love, but they weren't supposed to. Love conquered all, but you still have to earn a living. Q: How did they survive in the modern world? A: Very well indeed! Tickets $20 prepaid from the Theatre's TimeOut Café (open 9-3 Tu-Sa) or $25 at the door.
- We23May 8pm: Borland & Brechin in Concert!: Gregor Borland and Sandy Brechin are outstanding musicians who combine dazzling playing with good humour and quirkiness for an unforgettable performance. Gregor was 8-times Scottish fiddle champion in his youth, and these days he teaches and performs by invitation all over the world. Sandy is an extremely popular (and funny) accordionist—he performs at Edinburgh’s famous Keilidh on the Mound every New Year’s Eve, and with his many bands he has played in Oman, Russia, Columbia, Australia, the USA and many other countries. Together they last toured NZ in 2010 to great acclaim. Tickets $15 prepaid from the Theatre's TimeOut Café (open 9-3 Tu-Sa) or $20 at the door.
- Fr25/Sa26 May 7:30pm: Circus Royale World Premiere: Circus Royale is a new New Zealand comedy written by (former Theatre Chairman) Colin Beardon and directed by the Theatre’s Artist-in-Residence Liam Burke. He had a privileged upbringing and a social conscience. She grew up in New Zealand and took off on her OE. They met and fell in love, but they weren't supposed to. - Su27May 1-3pm: Ronu Majumdar & Basant Madhur in Concert: India's ace flautist needs no introduction to music lovers all over the globe. Ranendranath Majumdar, popularly known as Ronu Majumdar, is a force to reckon with in the realm of Indian classical music, both as a thinking musician and scintillating performer. By virtue of his phenomenal talent, he and the Bansuri are literally synonymous. If the flute is likened to a temple, Pt. Ronu Majumdar would be its foremost worshipper. Ronu ji's Bansuri is transcendental. It transports you to a zone where divinity reigns supreme and produces a balmy effect, thereby taking us on a spiritual journey. His Bansuri keeps juggling between eras. At one moment, it reminds you of the mythical Ras Leela of Lord Krishna and his Gopis; the next instance could be a jam session with ace guitarist Ry Cooder and Larry Coryell. Ronuji’s yearly performance schedule includes venues all over the world, which are so diverse that one cannot help but wonder at the man’s range of expression which enables him to musically mesmerise people across all barriers of age, boundaries and communication. Tickets $20 prepaid from the Theatre's TimeOut Café (open 9-3 Tu-Sa) or $25 at the door.
June 2012
- 01-09 June: Old: a Kaleidoscope production: "Old" is the story of a woman in a rest home and her life story, as seen through the eyes of her best friend. It is her journey through the Second World War, her friendships and the heartaches that life presents. Compared with earlier Kaleidoscope productions, there is quite a bit of singing (and less canned music) and much more dramatic process. Pat Urlich is fabulous in his role as musical director. There are lovely touches of humour and silliness as always. Shows 7:00pm Fr01, Sa02, Th07, Fr08 and Sa09Jun; matinees 2pm Sa02, Su03, Mo04 and Sa09Jun. Tickets are available at the Waiheke i-Site (372-1234) and are $21 (A Reserve), $18 (B Reserve) and $10 Child (Bench only)
- 15Jun 7pm and 16 June 2pm and 7pm: The Mikado: a Waiheke Choral Society: the famous Gilbert & Sullivan musical with an all-Waiheke cast and crew including director Alan Knight. Tickets $20 adult, $15 GoldCard / students and $10 for under-12s from WCS members, at the door and at Artworks Theatre's TimeOut Café (open 9-3 Tu-Sa)
