Waiheke Island - Local People, Local Knowledge
Spiritual Cinema
From Waihekepedia
Waiheke Spiritual Cinema Circle is a group of people who get together every month for an offering of films from all over the world that explore the questions of who we are, why we're here and where we're going with a focus on inspiring, enthusing and entertaining you — and fundraising for Island causes at the same time.
Spiritual Cinema evenings are held on the last Wednesday of each month at Waiheke Community Cinema, starting at 7:30pm, and are sponsored by Waiheke Wellness and the Cinema.
Entry is by donation ($10 suggested) or by koha, and proceeds go to a different community group every month.
Screenings are restricted to Cinema Circle members: you can join at the door (annual sub of $2).
Films for April 25th:
Many of life’s experiences open us to the expression of gratitude. This month’s films were hand-selected with this thought in mind.
In our feature film, "From Time to Time", Maggie Smith plays a sympathetic grandmother to a lonely boy separated from his parents during World War II. He begins a magical adventure that unlocks family secrets and unveils an exciting family history. Based on a best-selling children’s book, "From Time to Time" is sure to move you with its positive message about life, death and unbreakable family ties. Written, directed and produced by Academy Award-winning writer Julian Fellowes, this enchanting film was a prize-winning film at the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival and an Official Selection at the London Film Festival, and is an inspiring and moving film for all ages. It will remind you of the importance — and permanence — of family connection across generations.
You’ll also be inspired by the remarkable beauty of nature and humanity in our first short, "Gratitude", a thought-provoking meditation on thankfulness and reflection, narrated by spiritual leader Brother David Steindl-Rast. "Manhattan Melody" is a musical about Holly, an aspiring young actress who stumbles upon an evening of unexpected adventure and risk after meeting a handsome stranger on a dark night. In the short film "Lightweight", Elizabeth finds that when her future is up in the air, it’s hard to stay grounded.

The film stars Maggie Smith as Tolly’s grandmother. The film won the Adult Jury Prize at the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival. [98m]
This evening’s proceeds will go to the Jassy Dean Trust for all its good work for the Island's children, so please invite some friends, come along and be generous with your gift! Entry, as usual, by donation ($10 suggested) or koha.
